Yummy Sushi

My mom wanted to make sushi, so I decided to make some, too. =D

If you'd like to make some sushi as well, here are my five patterns (four original, one modified). Feel free to make as many as you'd like for friends and family, and please link to my blog if you like these patterns. Happy crafting!

Terminology (US)

ch: chain
st: stitch
sl st: slip stitch
sc: single crochet
hdc: half double crochet
dc: double crochet
inc: increase (sc2 in same st)
dec: decrease

Sushi with Filling

I like this pattern because it's more realistic in the sense that there's actually "rice" wrapped around the insides of the sushi. You can use anything you want for the sushi filling - my family likes putting egg, cucumber,  (ròusōng, or dried shredded pork), and yellow pickled radish so that's what I put in mine.

To make egg, or anything flat: ch7; starting with the 2nd ch from hook, sc across (6).

To make cucumber, pickled radish, or anything that's slightly chunkier: ch7; starting with the 2nd ch from hook, sc into each of the back bumps of the chain (6).

To make  or anything thinner: ch7; starting with 2nd ch from hook, sl st into each of the back bumps of the chain (6).

For each topping, fasten off leaving a short tail. Knot the starting and ending tails together, and then weave the ends into the middle of the topping (these will be hidden in the middle of the sushi).

To make the rest of the sushi:

Part A
Rnd 1: With white, ch9 and sl st to join (9).
Rnd 2: ch1, sc around, sl st to join (9). At this point, you might want to slip the ring around your sushi filling because it will be harder to do later on:
Rnd 3-5: ch1, sc around, sl st to join (9).
Rnd 6: ch1, inc in each st around, sl st to join (18). Fasten off.

Part B
Rnd 1: With white, join with sc to the other end of the sushi. inc in each st around (18). Join black.
Rnd 2: ch1, sc around, sl st to join (18).
Rnd 3: ch1; in back loops only, sc around, sl st to join (18).
Rnd 4-5: ch1, sc around, sl st to join (18). At this point, add some stuffing inside the sushi (you don't need much).
Rnd 6: ch1; join to bottom of sushi with sl st (hook under both black and white stitches, yarn over, draw through loops, pull through yarn on hook). Fasten off and weave in ends.

California Roll

Crab meat:
Row 1: With white, ch7. Starting with 2nd ch from hook, sc across (6).
Row 2-6: ch1, turn, sc across (6). Join pink.
Row 7-9: ch1, turn, sc across (6). Fasten off, leaving a medium tail. Roll up the yarn with the white on the inside and use yarn tail to stitch in place.

Avocado: Same as crab meat, but with green all the way through. You only need 6 or 7 rows.

Cut a strip of black felt or cloth and wrap it around both the crab and avocado. Tape or stitch into place. Then follow the instructions for the rice above, without changing to black yarn. Note that you may need an extra round depending on the height of your filling. Before stitching the sushi closed, use a length of beige yarn to add some sesame seeds around the middle.

Sushi with Roe

I was going for ikura (salmon roe) sushi, but it could also work as tobiko (flying fish roe) sushi.

For the sushi shell:
Rnd 1: With white, make a magic ring with 6sc, sl st to join (6).
Rnd 2: ch1, inc in each st around, sl st to join (12).
Rnd 3: ch1, [sc, inc] around, sl st to join (18). Join black.
Rnd 4: ch1, sc around, sl st to join (18).
Rnd 5: ch1; in back loops only, sc around, sl st to join (18).
Rnd 6-9: ch1, sc around, sl st to join (18). Fasten off, leaving a long tail.

With orange, make a string of bobbles. To make a bobble:
ch2; in 2nd ch from hook: [yarn over, hook through st, yarn over, draw loop through, yarn over and pull through first 2 loops on hook] x3. There should now be 4 loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through all 4 loops.

I made 11 bobbles for my sushi. Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Use this tail to stitch the bobbles in place - you can pull the tail through the open end of each bobble to both help it keep its shape and fasten the bobbles together.

Stuff your sushi shell with polyfill. Place the roe on top, and use the black tail to stitch the roe in place.

Egg Sushi

I based this sushi off the instructions at craftbits, though I only went up to 16 stitches for the rice, and 14 for the egg. For the seaweed wrapper, I also stitched an extra row so it was wider.

The egg sushi still turned out pretty large, so if you want an even smaller egg sushi just decrease the number of stitches you use (you can use the shrimp sushi rice pattern below and resize the egg appropriately.)

Shrimp Sushi

For the rice:
Rnd 1: With white, ch5, sc into 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 2 ch, 3sc in next sc. Working in back of chain, sc in next 2 st, 2sc in next st, sl st into first sc (10).
Rnd 2: ch1, sc in next 3 st, inc in next 2 st, sc in next 3 st, inc in next 2 st, sl st into first sc (14).
Rnd 3-8: ch1, sc around, sl st into first sc (14).
Rnd 9: ch1, dec, sc in next 3 st, dec twice, sc in next 3 st, dec, sl st into first sc (10). Fasten off, stuff, and stitch opening shut.

To make the shrimp:
Rnd 1: Using pink/orange, ch8. Starting with the 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 6 st, 3sc in next st. Working in back of chain, sc in next 5 st, inc in next st, sl st into first sc (16).
Rnd 2: ch1, sc around, sl st into first sc (16). Join white.
Rnd 3: ch1, sc around, sl st into first sc (16). Join pink/orange.
Rnd 4-5: ch1, sc around, sl st into first sc (16). Join white.
Rnd 6: ch1, sc around, sl st into first sc (16). Join pink/orange.
Rnd 7: ch1, sc6, dec, sc6, dec, sl st to join (14).
Rnd 8: ch1, sc5, dec, sc5, dec, sl st to join (12). Join white.
Rnd 9: ch1, dec, sc2, dec twice, sc2, dec, sl st to join (8). Join pink/orange.
Rnd 10: ch1, sc around, sl st to join (8). Join darker orange.
Rnd 11: Insert hook into each st on either side of the hook (the 2nd and last stitches of a typical round) and sc. *Chain 5. In 2nd st from hook, sc. Skip a stitch, hdc. Skip a stitch, dc.*
sc into the next two sts of the previous round (the 3rd and 2nd to last stitches), and again into the next pair of stitches (4th and 3rd to last). Repeat instructions within *asterisks*. sl st back into the center of tail, fasten off, and secure the centers of the tailfins if loose. Weave in ends.
